The Vanice of Asia - Macau

Macau now in 2009 is pretty much transformed into a Big City that's never sleep.

Gone are the only talk of the town about Lisboa casino the sole landmark since long ago, while still exisitng, together with the new & bigger Lisboa, Macau's main landmark is now replaced with many up and coming new & more extravegance Casino's spreads across from the Macau main city to the far side of new & upbringing town of Taipa across the bridges..3 different bridges as matter of facts.

One of them is the Venetiante Casino Hotel, certainly the so-acclaimed landmark in Taipa with part of it internal built just like the Vanice of Italy, beautifully constructed...quite romantic though ;)

Macau nowadays have transformed into a glamours country where the city never sleep! The night scene is absolutely impressive!!! Certainly there are much to offer apart from the grand setup of famous hotels cum casino giant like MGM, Wynn, Lisboa so on…they are many interesting historical attractions around the mian city area. Most of them are quite close to the town and rather easy to visit..either by way of walking or local buses transport.

Certainly as far as the popular food goes, never to be missed is of cos the Portugese-Tard. Must try the famous husband&wife outlets with the name as "Margaret Cafe" (wife outlet). It is located just behind the small lane of Auguster Lodge just few minutes walking distance away from New Lisboa Casino Hotel.

Tips to get around…….

Local buses charge a flat rate of $2.30(Macau city)/$3.30(Taipa) to anywhere along the way you wish to stop. So be sure to ride on the bus only if you find your way is way out of what you dun like by foot eh ;p Most big casino hotels do provide free shuttle buses to certain strategy location. Check out the hotel time table and you certainly will enjoy some free rides around the city…hehe Of cos there are plentyful of taxi to take you to places at your conveninces. Not too worry though as the taxi are all by meter. Generally Macau people are so much more frenlier and polite. You’ll love it there =D

Certain places like the Ruin of St Paul is best by walking. It is where most of the happenings are along the way to the ever popular attraction. Dun hesitate to try as many sample food you wish offered by the roadside shops as there is absolutely no obligation at all…haha =p

Here’s the best tips…getting tire of walking and feel like a cupper cafe!?..heheh! just drop in any of the casino and enjoy free flow of coffee, tea, soft drinks etc…absolutely free!!! be sure to crap a bottle of mineral water on your way out ya ;P….hehe And if you do feel that you are lucky go ahead and ‘enjoy’ yourself on the casino table. After it is still cheaper than you pay for the cafe outside the cafe joint… =D

Aung San Suu Kyi verdict is a Gross Travesty of Justice

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of one of Burma's most cherished heroes, the martyred General Aung San, who led his country's fight for independence from Great Britain in the 1940s and was killed for his beliefs in 1947. Suu Kyi has equaled her father's heroics with her calm but passionate advocacy of freedom and democracy in the country now called Myanmar, a name chosen by one of the most insensitive and brutal military dictatorships in the world....

The Elders say that the entire trial of Aung San Suu Kyi and her companions has been a gross travesty of justice. Her incarceration for the past six years under house arrest was found to be illegal in both domestic and international law by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Any conviction based on allegations of violating that house arrest is therefore invalid.

Elders’ chair, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu urged the international community not to accept the verdict and says that returning Daw Suu Kyi to house arrest is not a concession.

"This is a moral universe. Right and wrong matter. This decision is wrong. We must not allow the government of Burma to convince the world that they are making concessions in relation to Aung San Suu Kyi by returning her to house arrest instead of prison. This is not a concession – it is a manipulation of an illegal process. It must not be accepted by any government, ASEAN, the EU or the UN." – Desmond Tutu.

The Elders said that the trial was a further attempt to exclude Aung San Suu Kyi from any political process, particularly the elections due in Burma in 2010.

They have joined others in calling on ASEAN, the EU and UN to press Burma’s military leaders to release all political prisoners and begin an inclusive national process to review and amend the 2008 constitution, to allow participation by the National League for Democracy and other parties in the 2010 election and also admit international observers to supervise the 2010 election process.

Periods under detention

July 20, 1989: Placed under house arrest in Rangoon under martial law that allows for detention without charge or trial for three years.

July 10, 1995: Released from house arrest.

September 23, 2000: Placed under house arrest.

May 6, 2002: Released after 19 months.

May 30, 2003: Arrested following the Depayin massacre she was held in secret detention for over 3 months before being returned to house arrest.

May 25, 2007: House arrest extended by one year flouting a direct appeal from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to General Than Shwe.

October 24, 2007: Reached 12 years under house arrest, solidarity protests held at 12cities around the world.

May 27, 2008: House arrest extended for another year, illegal under both international law and Burma's own law.

August 11, 2009: House arrest extended for further 18 months due to "violation" arising from the May 2009 trespass incident.

Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. The decision of the Nobel Committee mentions:[106]

“ The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 1991 to Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar (Burma) for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights.
...Suu Kyi's struggle is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades. She has become an important symbol in the struggle against oppression...

...In awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 1991 to Aung San Suu Kyi, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to honour this woman for her unflagging efforts and to show its support for the many people throughout the world who are striving to attain democracy, human rights and ethnic conciliation by peaceful means.”

Oslo, 14 October 1991

“Human beings the world over need freedom and security that they may be able to realize their full potential.”

Malaysia : The Failed Nation!?

Recently, a friend of mine interviewed some fresh graduates applying for jobs with his engineering company in Malaysia. He accepted two applicants on a starting salary of RM1600. It struck me as odd that 15 years ago, my friend himself started work as a fresh graduate engineer for more or less the same pay.

Indeed, if you compare the salaries of graduates now and 15 or even 20 years ago, you'll find little difference but that their purchasing power is vastly different. It's the same story when you compare salaries of shop assistants, office staff, factory workers and others.

To compound the effect of inflation, the ringgit(RM) has depreciated greatly against all major currencies. The real income of most Malaysians has moved backwards.

This is why many Malaysians suffer under the petrol hike. The root of the problem is that their real incomes have shrunk in the face of inflation and depreciated currency.. Malaysians have not been spoiled by subsidy but are unable to move out of the time lock of stagnated and depreciated incomes..

If you compare the per capita incomes of Singapore , Hong Kong , Taiwan and South Korea , they are a few multiples of Malaysia although at independence all these countries were on the same economic level as Malaysia .

What has gone wrong? Malaysia was the rising star of East Asia , a country rich in natural resources with the most promising potential..

An interesting analysis.....

For those who started work around 1973, a 1.3 Litre Japaness car was RM 7000
Today the equivalent is..... let's say RM 60000...........8.5 times

In 1973 a double storey house was about RM 45,000..or less Today it is about RM 300,000............6.6 times(It was advertised in a school magazine at 37,000, Taman Lumba Kuda) This makes it 8.1 times

In 1973 an Engineer's pay was RM 1000 Today it is about RM 2000 +/-..............2 times.....

From 1973 to 2008........35 years......what is the Trend.? Bearish !!!!In a stock market when the trend is bearish , what do Malaysian do?...Exit !!!

When a country's trend is bearish what do Malaysian do?

This Bearish trend is more difficult to turn around as compared to the stock market.

Let's used these 3 items House, Car & Salary as a measurement of the country' s performance for the past 35 years......

There is a book which i saw at MPH bookshop in Malaysia entitled : Malaysia : The Failed Nation some of you may be interested to read it.
I tend to agreed with the writer.....

This morning I was having Coffee at McDonald ( now the coffee..100 % Arabica beans..is quite good@ RM 2.90......free refill!! I asked how much per hour is their pay?RM 3.00 ! x 8 hours = RM 24 per day... x 25 days = RM 600 per month

In Australia my daughter works part-time during her University days..she worked at Gloria Jeans Coffee.... the pay? A$ 14.00 ( @ 3.15 = RM 44 per hour......x 8 = RM 352 per day !!! x 25 days = RM 8800
13.3 times more !!!!! ......Price of houses in Perth is about the same in KL

Price of cars are about 23 % cheaper...in Perth.( Australia )

I think more and more people are becoming aware of this Bearish trend.
Developed country by 2020?...means High income country

Let's look at some as of year 2005 ( Financial Times )

USA GNP per capita US$ 35400
UK GNP per capita US$ 25510
Australia GNP per capita US$ 19530
Singapore GNP per capita US $ 20690

These are developed countries by income measurement

Malaysia 's GNP per capita US$ 3540 ( sTILL 4 FIGURES - rIGHT ??? )
Year 2020..developed country?Really...a sad story.

Worrying Trends, isn't it??Ringgit sliding further and further under the current BN

Stories from Bolehland

For the start, and found this rather amusing forwarded email artical to share ;) ...............

AUG 18Sometimes, you really have to laugh and cry, at the same time, at some of the stuff that is happening in Malaysia.

This is the transcript of a cross-examination from the Karpal Singh sedition trail. The person answering is a reporter from RTM, the official mouthpiece of the government. (In the bad old days it was called Radio Television Mahathir.)

Jagdeep: Do you know which party Karpal Singh is from?

Eliani : I am not sure.

Everybody present: [sense of disbelief]

Karpal: [smiled in amusement]

Jagdeep: Are you a voter?

Eliani: Yes.

Jagdeep: [turning to the court] You cannot be a Penangite.

Everybody present: [laughter]

Okay, let’s give her the benefit of the doubt. After all, people are always complaining that young people in Malaysia are not interested in politics, or that our education system has gone down the drain. That’s fine with me.

My simple question is, how on earth can RTM appoint a reporter who does not know current affairs or the major political personalities in this country?

The only other way of looking at this is that government departments, such as RTM, are hiring people no one else will take. In other words, there is a cushy government job waiting for you if you don’t know who Najib is.

Is it any wonder that the civil service is seen as a dumping ground for functioning illiterates?
This may explain why Cuepacs has been so successful in getting pay rises, extra holidays and now they are asking for an extra bonus for this year from the government. Never mind that we are in an economic crisis – oops, I forgot they do not understand what an economic crisis is.
Can you imagine the harm the civil service can do if they decided to do real work one day? Yes, it’s much better to pay them to do no harm by just showing up and collecting their “gaji buta”.
The second Dumb and Dumber episode must go to the MCA, the second most powerful party in government. According to its treasuer, there is “no record” of the RM10 million “donation” by Barisan Nasional (BN) backbenchers chief Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing last year.

Let me ask you this: who in their right mind would record this sort of transaction? Which political party in the BN “records” political donations? MCA must think Malaysians are so stupid that we believe “no record” means no money changed hands. Businessmen “donate” to political parties all the time, especially during elections, and no receipts or records are ever kept of such transactions.

Since MCA says there is “no record”, this can also mean that the MCA keeps excellent records. So, can we please see MCA’s list of political donations for 2009?

If MCA can show that they keep a record of all cash donations, I humbly apologise to the party for making fun of them. After all this is a party of towkays and they know how to make money – all in cash, mind you.

The final Dumb and Dumber episode (all in less than a week) goes to the political party that raises its “youth” age limit to 45, from the previous 40.

Wow, in Malaysia, a person who is 45 is still a “Youth”. This means a 30-year-old in Malaysia is a teenager and anyone under 20 is a toddler. I know some 45-year-olds with married children but in the MIC, they are “Youth”.

The conclusion is obvious: don’t listen to people who tell you that you have to get a job when you finish school or when you reach 30. You’re still too young.

There is no need to go to expensive spas, or pay for jamu and facials, forget the botox. To look younger, simply join MIC and instantly regain your Youth. This offer is limited so sign up now!
In summary, if you do not know who Karpal Singh (or Kit Siang) is, please apply for a job as reporter with RTM; if you give money to a political party please ask for official receipt; and finally, if you want to feel young again, please join MIC Youth.
